Kid Moments

The Real Reason Behind my Kids’ Police Costumes

Be the change you want to see in the world.

When it was time to come up costume themes to coordinate with my children, it was obvious what I wanted: Police Officer. When I shared my idea with some acquaintances, their face twisted “ Why would choose Police Officers for your children? For your BLACK children?” they questioned.

I’ll tell you why.

Because I believe there is no productivity in supporting anything short of unity and peace. I was not going to taint the image of the honor and pride it is to be an officer for my son. Yes, my black son. I was not going to tell him that he can’t be an officer for Halloween because of the social injustices that have happened all over the world. I was not going to take away his innocence and introduce the ugliness of the world.

Not yet.

My kids are 7, 4, and 3. They have been fortunate enough to be around police officers in their personal lives and to them, it is the coolest thing ever. To them being a police officer means protecting the innocent and serving justice. And that it shall stay, for now. There will, unfortunately, come a day where we sit down as a family and I will explain the ugly world of racism and social injustice. I will tell my son the hurdles he has to face as a black man, my daughters as black women. But that day is not today. Today The boys in blue mean to them Honor, respect, pride, and Justice. Let me hold on to that perfect world for my kids just a little bit longer……

And from the words of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Mother Theresa:

“We must live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

“I have decided to stick to love…Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

“You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.

-Malcolm X

If you judge people, you have no time to love them”

-Mother Theresa
